BLACKSBURG – The 40th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team rolled past ACC foe Miami 6-1 on Friday afternoon in the regular season finale for the Hokies. Tech honored its six seniors Andreas Bjerrehus, Amerigo Contini, Aaron Gomez, Joao Monteiro, Rafael Ribas and Edoardo Tessaro following today’s match.

The Hokies (15-7, 7-5 ACC) took the early lead after winning the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Contini and Tessaro paired up on two, giving up just one point to the Miami duo of Nile Clark and Piotr Lomacki to take it 6-1.

On three, Jai Corbett and Mitch Harper took down Kevin Bondar and Jesse Flores 6-3 to secure the point for Tech.

Virginia Tech went on top 2-0 with 80th-ranked Tessaro handing Fermin Calvo a 6-2, 6-2 loss at the No. 4 singles. Contini increased the Hokies advantage on three where he was tied with Flores at 5-5 in the opening set before winning the next two games to win it 7-5. In the second set, Contini rolled to the 6-2 win to give Tech a 3-0 lead.

The Hokies’ 25th-ranked Monteiro secured the team win, knocking off 37th-ranked Lomacki at one. Monteiro’s match played out much like the match on three with the two players tied at 5-5 in the opening set before the Tech senior took the final two points to win it 7-5. In the second set, Monteiro got out to the quick lead and went on to win it 6-3.

Harper gave the Hokies a 5-0 lead in the match as he downed Bernard Tefel 6-4, 6-4 on five. Gomez rounded out the Tech scoring with a win at six. Gomez fell behind 2-0 in the opening set, but came back to tie it up at 4-4. He held on for the break and scored on serve to win it 6-4 over Niclas Genovese. In the second set, the Miami player responded with a 6-3 win to force the 10-point tiebreaker in the third where Gomez secured it 10-6.

Virginia Tech will be back on the court this week for the ACC Championships. The tournament begins Thursday, April 21 at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, North Carolina.
