ATLANTA – The 40th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team fell to No. 31 Georgia Tech 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex in Atlanta, Georgia.
Virginia Tech’s 67th-ranked Andreas Bjerrehus claimed the point for the Hokies (14-7 6-5 ACC) with a win on court two. Bjerrehus won the opening set 7-5 before Carlos Benito forced the tiebreaker in the second set to win it 7-6(6). In the deciding super tiebreak for the third, Bjerrehus secured it 10-6 to prevent the shutout.
The Yellow Jackets (15-6, 8-3 ACC) won the doubles point with victories in two and three to get out to the 1-0 lead over the Hokies.
Georgia Tech pushed its lead to 3-0 with straight set wins on courts four and six. The Hokies battled to three sets in the other singles matches, but Georgia Tech clinched the team win on court one where 19th-ranked Joao Monteiro faced off against the Yellow Jackets’ 12th-ranked Christopher Eubanks.
Eubanks claimed the opening set 6-4, but Monteiro came back to win the second 6-2. In the final set the Georgia Tech player claimed it 6-3.
On court five, Mitch Harper took Nathan Rakitt to three sets. After giving up the opening set 6-4, Harper rallied to win the second 6-3, but Rakitt secured the final 6-3 to give Georgia Tech a 5-0 lead in the match.
The Hokies’ 91st-ranked Amerigo Contini also forced three sets with Cole Fiegel in the three. Fiegel won the opener 6-4, but Contini responded by giving up just one game in the second set to win it 6-1. In the final set, Fiegel took the 6-3 win.
Virginia Tech will return to the court on Friday, April 15 when the Hokies host Miami at 2 p.m. The match marks Tech’s Senior Day when the team will honor Bjerrehus, Monteiro, Contini, Tessaro, Aaron Gomez and Rafael Ribas.
