NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The 45th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team knocked off No. 51 Notre Dame 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Eck Tennis Pavilion in Notre Dame, Indiana.
Tech (13-6, 5-4 ACC) got off to a strong start, picking up the doubles point to go on top 1-0 over Notre Dame (10-12, 4-6 ACC). The Hokies’ Amerigo Contini and Edoardo Tessaro defeated Grayson Broadus and Quentin Monghan 6-4 in the No. 2.
ND won on court one leaving the deciding match on court three. Tech’s Jai Corbett and Mitch Harper paired up to take on Nicolas Montoya and Alex Lawson. The two duos battled and were tied at 6-6 sending the match into a tiebreaker. It was still close as the pairs knotted it up at 11-11 before Corbett and Harper scored the final two points to win the tiebreak 13-11.
The Hokies pushed their lead to 2-0 as 72nd-ranked Tessaro downed Lawson 6-3, 7-5 on court four. In the No. 1, Tech’s 21st-ranked Joao Monteiro secured a 6-4, 6-4 win over 33rd-ranked Monghan to put the Hokies on top 3-0.
Tech’s Contini secured the team win for the Hokies on court three where he knocked off Josh Hagar in straight set scores of 6-3, 6-4. Notre Dame won the next finished singles match on six, but that was the lone point for the Irish as the Hokies’ Harper defeated Kenneth Sabacinski 7-6, 6-3 on five.
Virginia Tech rounded out its scoring with a win on two where 74th-ranked Andreas Bjerrehus ddefeated Eddy Covalschi in three sets. After taking the first set 6-4, Bjerrehus fell in the second 6-1 before coming back strong in the final set to secure it 6-1.
The Hokies will be back on the court on Friday, April 8 at Clemson for a 2 p.m. match.
