BLACKSBURG – The 45th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team will host 6th-ranked Wake Forest on Friday, April 1 in an 11 a.m. match at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. Tech will then take to the road for a Sunday match at No. 51 Notre Dame slated for noon.
Friday’s match is Donut Day at the tennis center with the first 50 fans receiving a free donut.
The Hokies (12-5, 4-3 ACC) split decisions last weekend on the road, defeating Duke 5-2 before falling to top-ranked UNC 5-2. Amerigo Contini and Jai Corbett picked up the points for the Hokies against the Tar Heels.
Tech is led by 21st-ranked Joao Monteiro who has put together a 28-9 record overall this year, including 10-4 at the No. 1 singles during dual play. Andreas Bjerrehus, ranked 74th is 11-2 in duals and 17-8 on the year. He has a 7-2 mark in the two. The Hokies also have Edoardo Tessaro in the rankings at 72nd with an 8-4 tally in duals. Contini is 10-4 in the spring while Corbett is 10-3.
The Hokies’ Bjerrehus and Monteiro are also ranked in doubles, coming in at seventh in the ITA standing. The pair has tallied a 10-2 record this spring in the one and are 21-7 overall.
Wake Forest (22-4, 6-1 ACC) claimed a 6-1 win over No. 20 Florida State the last time out. The Deacons got the doubles point early and won five of their six singles matches to secure the win.
The Demon Deacons are led by 16th-ranked Skander Mansouri with a 14-2 record in duals, including 9-2 at the one. Petros Chrysochos comes in at 36th and has a record of 15-2 with a 12-0 mark at the No. 2. Romain Bogaerts is 17-3 in duals while Christian Seraphim has tallied a 17-2 mark. Dennis Uspensky is 19-4 and Jon Ho enters the weekend with a 14-7 record.
Wake has two duos ranked in the doubles standings. Mansouri and Seraphim are 12th with a 12-6 mark in the No. 1. Chrysochos and Ho are 48th with a 13-5 record this spring.
Notre Dame (10-10, 4-4 ACC) fell at Georgia Tech 5-2 last weekend but the Irish will face Florida State on Friday before taking on the Hokies Sunday. Josh Hagar and Alex Lawson picked up the points for the Irish with wins on courts three and four, respectively.
Quentin Monaghan is 33rd in the latest ITA standings with a 9-6 record at the one. Hagar is also 9-6 while Lawson is 7-10. Grayson Broadus has a 9-8 tally this spring.
The Irish’s duo of Monaghan and Lawson come in at 14th, but have only played four matches in the dual season. The pair are 10-4 overall and 2-2 at the one.
