CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The 45th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team fell to nation’s top-ranked North Carolina 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

UNC (20-1, 5-1 ACC) got out to the lead after holding on for the doubles point. The Hokies (12-5, 4-3 ACC) took the match on three as Jai Corbett and Mitch Harper paired up to defeat Andrew Gores and Brayden Schnur 6-3.

The Tar Heels took the match on two, leaving the deciding point to a top-10 match-up on one between Tech’s 7th-ranked Andreas Bjerrehus and Joao Monteiro and UNC’s 3rd-ranked Brett Clark and Robert Kelly. Tech fell behind 5-2 in the match, but the Hokies made it interesting, winning the next two games to make it 5-4. The Tar Heels held on serve to clinch the match 6-4 and get the point.

In singles, UNC clinched the team victory, winning on courts six, three and four before the Hokies got on the board as Corbett took the match on five. Corbett downed Anu Kodali with straight set scores of 6-3, 7-5.

The Hokies final point came on court two where Amerigo Contini defeated the Heels’ 37th-ranked Clark. After dropping the first set 6-4, Contini came back strong in the second to win it 6-3. The deciding set came down to a 10-point tiebreaker as Contini rolled to a 10-3 win.

Virginia Tech will return to the court on Friday, April 1 when the Hokies host Wake Forest at 11 a.m.
