No. 45 Hokies take 5-2 decision over Duke
Tech claims doubles point and four singles matches in road win

DURHAM, N.C. – The 45th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team defeated ACC foe Duke 5-2 on Friday afternoon at the Ambler Tennis Stadium in Durham, North Carolina. With the win the Hokies improve to 12-4 overall and 4-2 in the ACC.

Tech got out to the lead, winning the doubles point to go on top 1-0. After giving up the match on court three, the Hokies’ 7th-ranked Andreas Bjerrehus and Joao Monteiro won 6-2 on court one, defeating Nicolas Alvarez and Ryan Dickerson. The deciding match came down to the two where Amerigo Contini and Edoardo Tessaro paired up to defeat Vincent Lin and Catlin Mateas, 7-5.

The Blue Devils (8-10, 2-4 ACC) tied it up with a win on three, but the Hokies quickly reclaimed the lead as 74th-ranked Bjerrehus downed Mateas 7-5, 6-3 on court two.

Virginia Tech went on top 3-1 as Aaron Gomez claimed the win on court six. After taking the opening set 6-4, Gomez trailed Duke’s Daniel McCall 4-0 in the second. Gomez rallied, winning three straight games to cut it to 4-3. The two players traded points before Gomez broke to tie it at 5-5. He clinched it, winning the next two to secure the match.

The Hokies clinched the team win with 21st-ranked Monteiro’s victory over the Blue Devils’ 19th-ranked Alvarez on court one. The first set was close as the two players were tied at 6-6 before Monteiro took it in the tiebreak 7-5. Monteiro secured the point for the Hokies winning the second set 6-4.

Tech’s final point came from 72nd-ranked Tessaro in the No. 5. Tessaro dropped the first set 6-2 to Duke’s TJ Pura. The Tech player responded to win the next two 6-3, 6-1.

The Hokies are back on the court Sunday as they head to Chapel Hill, N.C. to face the top-ranked Tar Heels. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
