No. 40 Hokies defeat Louisville, 6-1
Tech takes doubles point and five singles matches in victory

BLACKSBURG – The 40th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team defeated ACC foe Louisville 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Tech (11-4, 3-2 ACC) got out to the lead after getting the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. Amerigo Contini and Edoardo Tessaro rolled to the win in the No. 2, defeating Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and George Hedley 6-1. The Cardinals (9-11, 0-6 ACC) had the win on three so the doubles point came down to court one.

The Hokies’ 21st-ranked duo of Andreas Bjerrehus and Joao Monteiro were tied at 4-4 with Alex Gornet and Jeffrey Brown, but the Tech pair scored the next two to win the match 6-4.

Tech got out to the 2-0 lead as 59th-ranked Tessaro picked up the win over Michael Quang, 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 4. Bjerrehus gave the Hokies a 3-0 advantage after defeating Morin-Kougoucheff 6-4, 6-2 in the two.

Contini clinched the team win for the Hokies in the No. 3 where he battled Hedley in the first set before winning it in the tiebreaker 7-6(4). In the second set, Contini rolled to a 6-1 decision to score the point for Tech.

Monteiro (ranked 18th) put the Hokies on top 5-0 as he downed Gornet 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 1. Jai Corbett rounded out the scoring for the Hokies as he picked up the 6-2, 6-4 win over Sean Donohue.

Virginia Tech will return to the court on Friday, March 25 for a 3 p.m. match at Duke.
