BLACKSBURG – The 40th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team fought hard but came up short to No. 23 Florida State in a 3-4 defeat on Friday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Virginia.
Tech (10-4) started strong after taking the doubles point. Jai Corbett and Mitch Harper paired up in the No. 3 to defeat the Seminoles (11-4) duo of Jose Garcia and Jack Haffey 6-3. The Hokies clinched the point on court one where #21-ranked Andreas Bjerrehus and Joao Montiero had the 6-4 win over 26th-ranked Benjamin Lock and Marco Nunez.
In singles, No. 30 Lock defeated No. 18 Monteiro in the No. 1 with a 6-3, 6-2 result to even the score at 1-1. Aaron Gomez defeated Jake Albo on court six to give the Hokies a 2-1 lead with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 result.
The hard-fought matches continued with Amerigo Contini defeating Michael Rinaldi 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 on court three to give Virginia Tech a 3-1 lead. However, the next three matches would all go into third set tiebreakers in favor of the Seminoles.
Nunez defeated Bjerrehus 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (7-1) in the No. 2. Aziz Dougaz next defeated #59 Edoardo Tessaro 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (10-8) on court four as the Seminoles tied the score at 3-3.
In the final match on court 5, Garcia and Harper battled. Harper won the opening set 7-6(5), but Garcia came back to take the second 6-4. The two battled in the final and were tied at 6-6, but Garcia held on to win it in the tiebreaker. 7-6 (10-8).
Virginia Tech will be back on the court Sunday, March 20 when the Hokies host Louisville. Match time is set for 1 p.m. at Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
