No. 40 Hokies down VCU 7-0
Tech wins five of six singles in straight sets

BLACKSBURG – The 40th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team downed VCU, 7-0 on Wednesday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Tech (10-3) got out to the lead after taking the doubles point. Amerigo Contini and Edoardo Tessaro paired up in the No. 2 to defeat the Ram’s (13-4) duo of Arvid Noren and Philip Mobius, 6-2. The Hokies clinched the point on court three where Jai Corbett and Mitch Harper had the 6-2 win over Catalin Fifea and Michal Voscek.

In singles, Corbett gave the Hokies a 2-0 advantage as he took care of Louis Ishizaka in the No. 6 with a 6-1, 6-1 result. The Hokies went on top 3-0 as Harper downed Noren 6-0,6-3 in the five.

Andreas Bjerrehus clinched the team win for Tech with a win on court two, defeating Vitor Lima 6-1, 6-2. Contini pushed Virginia Tech’s lead to 5-0 on court three where he defeated Fifea with straight set scores of 6-2, 6-3.

Tech’s 18th-ranked Joao Monteiro squared off against Voscek on court one. After winning the opening set, 6-2, Monteiro trailed 4-1 in the second before rallying to win four of the next five games to tie it up at 5-5. The Hokies’ senior closed it out to win the final two points needed to take the set 7-5.

The final Hokies point came on court four where Tessaro, ranked 59th, faced Daryl Monfils. Tessaro won the opening set 6-3, but Monfils took the second 6-3. In the tiebreak, Tessaro responded to win it 1-0 (10-6) securing the match.

Virginia Tech will be back on the court on Friday, March 18 when the Hokies host No. 23 Florida State. Match time is set for 3 p.m. at Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
