BLACKSBURG – Senior Andreas Bjerrehus defeated No. 2-ranked Thai-Son Kwiatkowski on Sunday evening, but the Virginia Tech men’s tennis team fell to rival Virginia 6-1 at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Virginia.

The Hokies (8-3, 1-1 ACC) fell behind after dropping a closely contested doubles point. Tech’s duo of Jai Corbett and Mitch Harper fell in the No. 3 to UVA’s (9-2, 2-0 ACC) J.C. Aragone and Henrik Wiersholm 6-4.

In the No. 2 doubles, the Hokies’ pair of Amerigo Contini and Edoardo Tessaro trailed 0-3 to Collin Altamirano and Thai-Son Kwiatkowski before rallying to come back and tie it up at 5-5. The Cavalier duo held on to take the final two points and secure the team point for UVA.

The No. 1 doubles was a showdown between two top-12 duos as Tech’s 12th-ranked Bjerrehus and Joao Monteiro battled 7th-ranked Luca Corinteli and Ryan Shane to a tiebreaker where the Hokies led 6-5, but the match went unfinished once the doubles point was decided.

Bjerrehus trailed 5-1 in the opening set before rallying against second-ranked Thai-Son Kwiatkowski to tie it up at 6-6 and force the tiebreaker. The two were knotted at 6-6 in the breaker, but Bjerrehus scored the final two points to secure the set 8-6. In the second set, Bjerrehus led at 5-2 before Kwiatkowski retired to get Hokies on the board, trailing UVA 3-1.

The ‘Hoos secured the match with a win in the No. 5 where Wiersholm was able to hold on against Harper for a pair of 7-5, 7-5 decisions.

Tech faced a pair of three-set battles on courts one and four. In the No. 1 the Hokies’ 20th-ranked Monteiro squared off against 14th-ranked Shane. After dropping the first set 6-3, Monteiro came back to win the second by the same margin. In the final set, Monteiro got up 3-1, but the UVA player responded as the two were knotted at 6-6 to go into the tiebreaker. Shane held on in the breaker 7-2 to claim the set and the match.

After being edged by 111th-ranked Aragone in the opening set 7-5, Tessaro trailed 3-1 in second before putting together a big comeback to knot it at 6-6. He took the tiebreaker 10-8 to force a third set where Aragone clinched the point for UVA with a 6-1 decision.
