BLACKSBURG – The 53rd-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team got off to a strong start in ACC competition, defeating 40th-ranked NC State, 6-1 on Friday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Virginia.

The Hokies (8-2, 1-0 ACC) took the early lead after claiming the doubles point. In the No. 1, Tech’s 12th-ranked Andreas Bjerrehus and Joao Monteiro rolled past Ivan Saveljic and Michael Ogden, 6-3. Tech secured the point with the win at three where Jai Corbett and Mitch Harper paired up for the 6-4 decision over Thomas Weigel and Simon Norenius.

Tech took a 2-0 lead over the Wolfpack (11-7, 0-1 ACC) as 20th-ranked Monteiro defeated 72nd-ranked Nick Horton 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 1 singles. Bjerrehus gave Tech a 3-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-1 decision over 83rd-ranked Norenius on court two.

The Hokies’ 76th-ranked Edoardo Tessaro clinched the match for the team in the four as he downed Ivan Saveljic 6-3, 6-2.

Harper put the Hokies on top 5-0 with a win in the No. 5 over Igor Saveljic. After rolling in the first set to a 6-2 win, Harper was tied with Igor Saveljic at 3-3 in the second before outscoring the Wolfpack player 3-1 over the next rallies to secure the 6-4 win.

Corbett rounded out the scoring for the Hokies with a win on court six. After trailing much of the first set to the Wolfpack’s Shoti Meparidze, Corbett came back from down 2-4 to win it 7-5. Corbett claimed the second set handily 6-2.

The Hokies will return to the court on Sunday, March 6 when Tech faces rival No. 2-ranked Virginia. Match time is set for 6 p.m. at Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
