No. 53 Hokies open ACC play, hosting No. 40 NC State, No. 2 Virginia
Tech faces Wolfpack Friday at 3 p.m., Cavaliers Sunday at 6 p.m.

BLACKSBURG – The 53rd-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team is set to open the ACC slate on Friday, March 4 hosting 40th-ranked NC State at 3 p.m. Tech will also host in-state rival second-ranked Virginia on Sunday, March 6 at 6 p.m. Both matches will be played at Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Tech (7-2) enters the the ACC schedule, coming off a doubleheader sweep of College of Charleston and JMU the last time out. The Hokies are led by 20th-ranked Joao Monteiro who has tallied a 6-1 mark this season in the No. 1. Amerigo Contini, Andreas Bjerrehus and Mitch Harper have also been solid for the Hokies this spring with each having records of 5-1. Jai Corbett is 5-2 on the season and 76th-ranked Edoardo Tessaro is 3-1.

In doubles, the Hokies are led by Monteiro and Bjerrehus who are ranked 12th in the ITA standings. The pair have posted a 5-1 record in the No. 1 during duals.

NC State (11-6) is coming off a 6-1 win over UNC Greensboro. This marks the Wolfpack’s ACC opener as well. The Wolfpack is led by Nick Horton, ranked 72nd, who has tallied a 10-2 record this spring. Simon Norenius is ranked 83rd with a 13-1 mark, including a 7-0 record in the No. 1. Thomas Weigel is 13-2 in duals while Igor Saveljic is 7-7.

Virginia (8-2) fell to 11th-ranked Illinois 4-3 the last time out. The Cavaliers picked up the doubles point and got singles points from JC Aragone (#111) and Henrik Wiersholm. UVA will face Louisville on Friday before making the trip to Blacksburg for Sunday’s match.

The Cavaliers are led by No. 2-ranked Thai-Son Kwiatkowski with a 5-3 record. Ryan Shane is ranked 14th and has posted a 4-3 mark in duals at the No. 1. Collin Altamirano enters the rankings at 29th and has posted an 8-1 record this spring. In doubles Kwiatkowski has teamed up with Mac Styslinger to be ranked sixth with a 5-0 record. Luca Corintelli and Shane are ranked seventh with a record of 6-2 at one.

Sunday’s match is presented by Virginia529, the official college savings plan of Virginia Tech Athletics. It is also a potential point in the Virginia529 Commonwealth Clash, the point rivalry series between the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech.
