BLACKSBURG – The 46th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team swept a pair of matches on Thursday, defeating both College of Charleston and James Madison 7-0 at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

Tech (7-2) got out to the early lead in the morning match against the Cougars (5-3) after winning the doubles point as Tech’s 12th-ranked Andreas Bjerrehus and Joao Monteiro shutout Rodrigo Encinas and Juan Estevarena 6-0 in the one. Amerigo Contini and Edoardo Tessaro clinched the point, defeating Josh Record and Vasily Kichigin 6-3 on court three.

Aaron Gomez got the Hokies on the board in singles, winning on court six 6-3, 6-2 over Garrett Gordon. Monteiro, ranked 20th in singles, put Tech on top 3-0 after picking up the 6-4, 6-1 decision over Estevarena on court one.

Bjerrehus clinched the team win for the Hokies, defeating Zack Lewis 6-2, 6-3 on court two.

In the second match of the day, the Hokies again got out to the lead after winning the doubles point. Jai Corbett and Mitch Harper won at the two, picking up a 6-3 win over Milian Ruzic and Sebastian Salinas. The point was secured by Jason Kros and Freddy Mesmer pairing up for the 6-1 victory against Maxi Branth and Brett Moorhead in the No. 3.

Kros gave the Hokies a 2-0 lead after defeating Ruzic 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 6 while Mitch Harper claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win in the No. 4 over Tristan Stitt to put Tech up 3-0.

Gomez secured the team win for the Hokies in the No. 5, downing Branth, 6-2, 6-3.

Virginia Tech will return to the court on Friday, March 4 when the Hokies open the ACC slate, hosting NC State at 3 p.m.
