Men's Tennis hosts Charleston, JMU in doubleheader
No. 46 Hokies face Cougars at 11 a.m., Dukes at 5 p.m.

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team is set to host College of Charleston and James Madison in a doubleheader on Thursday, Feb. 25 at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. Tech faces the Cougars at 11 a.m. followed by the Dukes at 5 p.m.

The Hokies (5-2), ranked 46th in the latest ITA standings, are coming off 13-day break after picking up a 7-0 win over UMBC on Feb. 12. Tech got out to the early lead in the match after claiming the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. The Hokies won all six singles matches in straight-sets to complete the sweep of the Retrievers.

Joao Monteiro, ranked 20th in singles, leads the Hokies with a 4-1 record in duals playing in the No. 1. Andreas Bjerrehus has also posted a 4-1 record the spring while Amerigo Contini, Edoardo Tessaro (No. 76 ITA) and Mitch Harper have tallied 3-1 marks. Monteiro and Bjerrehus are ranked 12th in doubles with a 4-1 record at the one.

Charleston (5-2) claimed a 7-0 win over North Carolina A&T the last time out. The Cougars’ Juan Estevarena was recently named the CAA Player of the Week and brings a six-match win streak at No. 1 into Thursday’s tilt. Estevarena is 6-1 on the season while Ryan Khan is 5-1 playing primarily at five and six. Rodrigo Encinas is 4-2.

JMU (3-2) defeated Norfolk State 5-2 last weekend. The Dukes took the doubles point and picked up points in the No. 1, 3, 5 and 6 to secure the match. Sebastian Salinas is 4-1 in duals playing in the No. 1. Brett Moorhead is also 4-1 while Maxi Branth is 2-2.
