COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 19th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team fell on the road to No. 8 Ohio State, 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at the OSU Varsity Tennis Center in Columbus, Ohio.

Virginia Tech (4-2) fell behind after giving up the doubles point to Ohio State (8-0) as the Buckeyes claimed wins in the No. 1 and No. 2.

The Buckeyes extended their lead to 2-0 with Ralf Steinback winning against Jai Corbett 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 5. Tech gave up the next point in the No. 1 where the Hokies’ 14th-ranked Joao Monteiro faltered against seventh-ranked Mikael Torpegaard 6-3, 6-2.

In the No. 2, the Hokies Andreas Bjerrehus fell in the opening set 6-2, but gave 19th-ranked Chris Diaz all he could handle in the second frame as Bjerrehus forced the set into a tiebreaker. Diaz held on to win it 7-6 (7-5).

The Hokies claimed first set wins on courts three, four and six with Amerigo Contini, Edoardo Tessaro and Mitch Harper leading in their respective matches.

Contini defeated 10th-ranked Hugo Di Feo 7-5 in the first set and was up 5-4 in the second. Tessaro had a 6-4 win over 25th-ranked Herkko Pollanen in the opening set and was tied at 6-6 in the second. Harper held on to defeated Martin Joyce 7-6(2) in the opening set before falling 6-4 in the second. The two players were tied at 2-2 in the third.

Virginia Tech will be back on the court Friday, Feb. 12, hosting UMBC at 2 p.m.
