#19 Hokies defeat St. Bonaventure, Richmond in doubleheader

BLACKSBURG – The 19th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team picked up a pair of wins on Friday afternoon, defeating St. Bonaventure 7-0 before downing Richmond 5-2 in a doubleheader at Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

Virginia Tech opened the day with the win over the Bonnies. After claiming the doubles point with wins on courts one and three, the Hokies went on to roll in singles play.

Tech’s 46th-ranked Edoardo Tessaro put the Hokies on top 2-0 as he downed Victor Blanco 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 2 while Andreas Bjerrehus secured the 6-1, 6-2 decision over Eduardo Irizarry on court one. Jai Corbett secured the win for the Hokies, giving Tech the 4-0 lead in the match as he secured the 6-2, 6-1 decision over Hector Martinez in the three.

Mitch Harper pushed the Tech lead, defeating Miki Nobuzawa 6-4, 6-0 on court four while Jason Kros had the 6-3, 6-0 decision in the five. George Cartledge completed the sweep with the win in six, downing Carlos de La Cruz 6-3, 6-0.

In the second match of the day, the Hokies again got out to the early lead by winning in the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to take a 1-0 lead over Richmond.

Tessaro was again the first completed singles match, giving Tech a 2-0 lead, giving up just one game as he dropped Caleb Troy 6-0, 6-1. The Hokies’ 14th-ranked Joao Monteiro pushed the lead to 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-3 win in the No. 1.

Freddy Mesmer clinched the match for the Hokies, defeating Brice Polender 7-5, 6-3 on court five. The Hokies final point came in the six where Jason Kros downed Jonathan Quenard 7-2, 7-5.

Virginia Tech will be back on the court on Sunday, Feb. 7 when the Hokies travel to Columbus, Ohio to face No. 8 Ohio State. Match time is set for noon and live scoring/video is available by clicking here.
