No. 18 Hokies sweep past No. 58 Boise State, 7-0
Tech rolls in home opener

BLACKSBURG – The 18th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team swept No. 58 Boise State, 7-0, on Saturday evening to open the 2016 home slate at Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

The Hokies (2-1) took the early 1-0 lead after claiming the doubles point. Amerigo Contini and Edoardo Tessaro paired up in the No. 2 to defeat Brian Foley and Lewis Roskilly 6-3. In the No. 3, Jai Corbett and Mitch Harper defeated Abe Hewko and Pedro Platzeck 6-3.

Virginia Tech took a 2-0 lead as 46th-ranked Tessaro claimed a 6-4, 6-1 win over Hewko on court four. The Hokies went on top 3-0 with Corbett’s 6-3, 6-1 win over Roskilly in the No. 5.

Tech’s 14th-ranked Joao Monteiro clinched the team win for the Hokies as he downed Toby Mitchell 6-4, 6-0 in the No. 1. Contini added to Tech’s score with a 6-2, 7-6(4) win over Foley in the two.

Harper battled in the No. 6 as he and Platzeck went to three sets. The Tech player won the opening set 6-4, but Platzeck responded in the second to take it 6-1. Harper rallied to win the third, 6-3.

The Hokies’ Andreas Bjerrehus wrapped up the scoring as he defeated Kyle Butters 7-5, 6-4 in the No. 3.

Virginia Tech will be back on the court on Friday, Feb. 5 for a doubleheader at Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. The Hokies will take on St. Bonaventure at 10 a.m. before facing Richmond at 2 p.m.
