BLACKSBURG - The 18th ranked Virginia Tech men's tennis team is set to take on the 58th ranked Broncos from Boise State on Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Virginia.
The Hokies are coming off a 4-0 loss to 17th-ranked Stanford in the ITA kickoff. The 4-0 score is a little deceiving as the Hokies were competitive in all matches and were ahead in the majority of the ones that remained unfinished. The next match against Minnesota was canceled due to poor weather in New York.
The Hokies have two nationally ranked singles competitors in Joao Monteiro at 14th and Edoardo Tessaro at 46th, but both suffered losses in the last match against Stanford. The doubles team of Andreas Bjerrehus and Monteiro are also ranked at 21st.
Boise State is coming off of a loss to highly ranked No. 4 Texas A&M after a four match winning streak. The Broncos come in with a record of 4-1 with wins over Grand Canyon, Montana State, Southern Utah and San Francisco. The Broncos currently have no ranked singles or doubles teams, but they still come in nationally ranked at 58th.
Both Toby Mitchell and Kyle Butters of the Broncos suffered their first losses of the year against the Aggies on January 24 in the ITA Kickoff. The freshmen tandem of Pedro Platzeck and Abe Hewko fell to the 29th ranked doubles team from Texas A&M in a tough 6-2 battle.
