No. 14 Tech falls to No. 18 Stanford, 4-0
Hokies wrap up ITA Kickoff

NEW YORK – The 14th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team fell to 18th-ranked Stanford 4-0 on Sunday afternoon during the 2016 ITA Kickoff Weekend hosted by Columbia University.

Virginia Tech (1-1) won the No. 3 doubles match with Jai Corbett and Mitch Harper teaming up to sweep David Wilczynski and Yale Goldberg 6-0.

The other two doubles matches were battles that went into tiebreakers. In the No. 2, Amerigo Contini and Edoardo Tessaro took on the Cardinal’s Tom Fawcett and Sameer Kumar. The two tandems were tied at 6-6, but Stanford was able to hold on in the tiebreak for a 7-5 win.

The deciding match was played out on court one where Tech’s 21st-ranked Andreas Bjerrehus and Joao Monteiro squared off against 42nd-ranked Maciek Romanowicz and Nolan Paige. After being knotted at 6-6, the Cardinal used the tiebreak to secure the match and the doubles point with a 7-3 decision.

In singles, Stanford was able to claim three matches before the Hokies got on the board. Fawcett, ranked 9th in the ITA standings, defeated Tech’s 14th-ranked Monteiro 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 1. Paige took the match on court four with a 6-3, 6-4 decision over the Hokies’ 46th-ranked Tessaro. The Cardinal also won in the No. 6 where Kumar defeated Corbett 6-1, 7-5.

In the matches that went unfinished, the Hokies led on all three courts. Contini had taken the first set 7-5 on court two over 57th-ranked Wilczynski and the two were tied at 1-1 in the second when the match was called.

Bjerrehus was one point away from securing a Tech win on court three where he was up on 89th-ranked Romanowicz 6-3, 5-1. The Hokies’ Aaron Gomez also led in his match, holding the 6-4, 3-2 advantage over 61st-ranked Michael Geneder in the No. 5.

Virginia Tech will not play a second match in the ITA Kickoff Weekend due to the altered schedule and its affects on the Hokies’ travel plans.

The Hokies will be back on the court on Saturday, Jan. 30 in the team’s home opener for 2016 when Tech hosts Boise State in a 5 p.m. match at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
