TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team got off to a strong start in the 2016 dual season, defeating No. 65 Alabama 5-2 in a road win on Saturday afternoon at the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

The Hokies (1-0) claimed the early point, winning in the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches. Tech’s Jai Corbett paired up with newcomer Mitch Harper on court three for a 6-3 win over Spencer Richey and Matthew Rossouw. The Hokies clinched the point as 21st-ranked Andreas Bjerrehus and Joao Monteiro took a 6-4 decision against Alabama’s Korey Lovett and Mazen Osama.

Tech took a 2-0 lead in the match as Bjerrehus, playing in the No. 4, defeated Grayson Goldin 6-0, 6-2. The Hokies went on top 3-0 with No. 14 Monteiro’s win over No. 106 Lovett on court one, 6-3, 6-3.

Alabama got on the board with the next finished match as the Crimson Tide’s 123rd-ranked Becker O’Shaughnessey defeated Tech’s 46th-ranked Edoardo Tessaro with a 6-1, 6-4 decision in the No. 3.

Virginia Tech’s Aaron Gomez secured the team victory for the Hokies with a win on court five, defeating Nikko Madregallejo 6-3, 6-3.

The Hokies’ final point of the match came in the No. 2 where Tech’s Amerigo Contini battled with 66th-ranked Osama. Contini dropped the first set 6-4, but fought back in the second to knot it up at 6-6 and force the tiebreaker where he rolled to a 7-1 decision. In the super tiebreaker, Contini secured the match 10-6.

Virginia Tech will be back on the court next weekend at the ITA Kick Off Weekend hosted by Columbia University in New York, New York. The Hokies will open the weekend on Saturday, Jan. 23 in a 10 a.m. match against Stanford.
