BLACKSBURG – Senior Joao Monteiro secures the ITA Atlantic Region singles championship on Tuesday during the final day of action at the 2015 ITA Men’s Tennis Atlantic Region Championships at Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Virginia.
Monteiro squared off against Old Dominion’s Adam Moundir in the final round. Monteiro went up 3-0 early in the opening set, but Monteiro answered with three straight points to win it 6-3. The two battled again in the second with Monteiro jumping out to a 3-1 lead. Moundir battled back, winning three consecutive games to go up 4-3. Monteiro and Moundir traded points on serve to tie it up at 6-6, forcing the tiebreak.
In the tiebreak, Moundir led early at 2-1, but Monteiro broke back-to-back serves to go up 3-2. The two were tied again at 4-4, but Monteiro scored three straight to secure the win 7-6 (7-4).
Monteiro advances to the ITA Indoor National Championships in Flushing Meadows, New York, Nov. 12-15.
In doubles, the Tech duo of Amerigo Contini and Edoardo Tessaro picked up the first set 6-2 win over ODU’s Moundir and Aziz Kijametovic. In the second set the two teams were tied at 4-4, but the Monarchs’ pair scored in back-to-back games to win it 6-4.
A 10-point tiebreak was used for the deciding set with the Hokies and Monarchs tied at 3-3 before ODU opened it up to go on top 8-5. The Hokies battled back, cutting it to 9-8, but ODU scored in the final game to secure it 10-8.
Virginia Tech returns to the court Nov. 6-8 when members of the team travel to Winston-Salem, North Carolina for the Wake Forest Invitational.
