BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team is set to compete in the finals for both singles and doubles after claiming wins on Monday at the 2015 ITA Atlantic Region Championships at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Virginia.
The Hokies started the day with the fifth-seeded doubles tandem of Amerigo Contini and Edoardo Tessaro picking up the win in semifinals, defeating George Washington’s fourth-seeded Danil Zelenkov and Julius Tverijonas 6-4, 6-4.
The Tech duo advances to the finals where they will face ODU’s sixth-seeded Adam Moundir and Aziz Kijametovic.
In singles, fourth-seeded Joao Monteiro got on the court in the quarterfinals against ODU’s Michael Weindl, rolling past the Monarch’s player 6-2, 6-1. Monteiro followed up with a strong semifinal match, giving up just one game in two sets to Penn State’s Aws Laaribi (14th-seed) to win 6-0, 6-1.
Monteiro will play ODU’s Moundir in the finals of singles at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The doubles match will follow and will not be played before 1 p.m.
