BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech advances to the quarterfinals of singles and the seminfinals of doubles with wins on Sunday at the 2015 ITA Atlantic Region Championships at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Virginia.

The Hokies started the day with a pair of wins in doubles. Tech’s second-seeded duo of Andreas Bjerrehus and Joao Monteiro knocked off UMBC’s Justin Carter and Alexander Drean, 8-4

In the other doubles match, Tech’s fifth-seeded Amerigo Contini and Edoardo Tessaro secured an 8-3 win over Penn State’s Aws Laaribi and Ben Lieb.

Bjerrehus and Monteiro will face sixth-seeded Adam Moundir and Aziz Kijametovic of Old Dominion in the semifinals. Contini and Tessaro are set to square off against George Washington’s Danil Zelenkov and Julius Tverijonas.

Monteiro also had a strong day in singles, claiming a pair of wins to advance into tomorrow’s quarterfinals. In his first match, fourth-seeded Monteiro defeated William & Mary’s Aidan Talcott 6-3, 6-4. In the Round of 16, Monteiro secured a 7-5, 7-5 win over 12th-seeded Matt Barry of Penn State.

Tech’s sixth-seeded Tessaro rolled past GW’s Christos Hadjigeorgiou 6-0, 6-2 to move on to the Round of 16 where he faced 13th-seeded Luca Corinteli of UVA. The Hokies’ player fell in the opening set 3-6, but came back to win the second 6-3. Corinteli retired with injury, advancing Tessaro into the next round.

The Hokies will be back on the court on Monday for the semifinals of doubles as well as the singles quarterfinals and semifinals. Doubles are set for 8:30 a.m. indoor while the singles are scheduled to begin outdoor at 11:30 a.m.
