Tech continues strong play at ITA Regionals

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team continued its strong play on Saturday, moving on in singles and doubles at the 2015 ITA Atlantic Region Championships at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Tech started the day with two doubles teams advancing to tomorrow’s quarterfinals. Second-seeded Andreas Bjerrehus and Joao Monteiro knocked off George Washington’s pair of Cahit Kapukiran and Chris Reynolds 8-4. In the next round Bjerrehus and Monteiro claimed an 8-6 decision over JMU’s Rob Stirling and Miljan Ruzic.

The Hokies’ fifth-seeded pair of Amerigo Contini and Edoardo Tessaro defeated Richmond’s Caleb Troy and Brice Polendar. Contini and Tessaro secured the 8-4 win over UMBC’s Eliott Loubatie and Biyik Akinshemoyin to in the round of 16 to move into the quarterfinals.

In singles action, top-seeded Bjerrehus rolled past Norfolk State’s Antonio Pejic 6-1, 6-1 to move on to Sunday’s Round of 32. Fourth-seeded Monteiro also cruised to a win, defeating Temple’s Santiago Canete 6-0, 6-3.

Tech’s Edoardo Tessaro, seeded sixth, took a 6-4 first set win over William & Mary’s Alec Miller, but the Tribe’s player kept it close in the second set with the two tied at 6-6. Tessaro secured the win in the tiebreak 7-2.

The Hokies’ 16th-seeded Aaron Gomez took down Temple’s Nicolas Paulus to advance. In the first set, the two battled with Gomez winning it in a tiebreak 7-6(4). Gomez won the match with a 6-3 decision in the second set.

In the consolation draw, George Cartledge defeated Richmond’s Brice Polender in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.

Virginia Tech will be back on the court starting at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday morning in doubles. Two rounds of singles will follow.
