BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team picked up three wins in doubles and a pair of victories in singles on Friday during the second day of the 2015 ITA Atlantic Region Championships at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Virginia.
Tech’s second-seeded Andreas Bjerrehus and Joao Monteiro rolled past Saint Joseph’s Tristan Boustany and Kevin Gates 8-1. The Hokies’ fifth-seeded duo of Amerigo Contini and Edoardo Tessaro also claimed an impressive win, defeating Mount St. Mary’s Louis Tonon and Brandon Wortkotter 8-2. Both Tech teams earned their wins in the second round after receiving byes through the first.
Aaron Gomez and Freddy Mesmer took to the court in the second round to square off against Liberty’s David Bush and Diego Castano. The Hokies and Flames kept it close and were tied at 7-7, but the Tech duo claimed the tiebreaker 7-3 to win the match and advance.
In singles action, Tech’s Mesmer defeated Saint Joseph’s Kyle Chalmers with straight set scores of 6-3, 6-4. Hokies’ newcomer Jason Kros played a close opening set with Navy’s Aries Wong, edging the Midshipman 7-6(7). In the second set, Kros rolled to a 6-2 win to secure the match.
The Hokies will be back on the court Saturday morning at 8 a.m. for doubles round of 32 followed by the round of 16. Singles will follow with one round after the doubles.
