TULSA, Okla. - The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team fought hard on Thursday, but faltered during the opening day of the main draw at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Tech’s 109th-ranked Edoardo Tessaro took on 29th-ranked Chris Diaz of Ohio State. Tessaro took the opening set 6-2. In the second set the two battled with Tessaro taking an early lead in games, but Diaz came back to win it 7-5. In the third, Diaz went up 3-0 before Tessaro retired.
The Hokies’ 70th-ranked Joao Monteiro faced seventh-ranked and No. 2 seeded Nicolas Alvarez of Duke. Alavarez won the first set 6-4, but Monteiro took control in the second for a 6-4 win. In the final set, the Blue Devil player secured the win 6-3.
Amerigo Contini, ranked 43rd, also battled on the opening day of the main draw. Edged in the first set 7-6(2), Contini came back for a 6-3 win in the second over Illinois’ 46th-ranked Aron Hiltzik. In the deciding set, the two went back-and-forth forcing a tiebreak that the Illini player held on to win 7-6(4).
The Hokies will return to action tomorrow in the consolation draw at the ITA All-American Championships.
