Tech advances to singles main draw at ITA All-American
Tessaro and Monteiro will join Bjerrehus and Contini in main draw

TULSA, Okla. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team continued its winning ways on Wednesday as Edoardo Tessaro and Joao Monteiro advanced out of the qualifying draw of singles at the 2015 ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Tech has four of its student-athletes competing in the main draw, starting tomorrow. It marks the most in program history as well as the most of any one school in the field. Tessaro and Monteiro will join teammates Andreas Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini, who both received automatic bids to the main draw.

To get to the next round, 109th-ranked Tessaro knocked off 91st-ranked Justin Butsch of LSU. Tessaro won the first set 6-1 and was up 3-0 in the second before Butsch retired.

Tech’s 70th-ranked Monteiro defeated 122st-ranked Ben Donovan of Cal Poly with straight-set scores of 6-3, 6-1.

Monteiro and Bjerrehus teamed up in qualifying doubles, winning their first match of the day over USC’s Nick Crystal and Max de Vroome. The Tech duo dropped the first set 6-3, but came back to take the second 7-5. In the tiebreak, Bjerrehus and Monteiro rolled to a 10-3 win.

In the second doubles match of the day, Bjerrehus and Monteiro fell to Texas A&M’s Jordi Arconada and Max Lunkin 7-6(1), 6-3.

The Hokies will be on the court starting at 9 a.m. CT for the opening round of main draw single at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
