TULSA, Okla. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team advances in both singles and doubles on Tuesday at the 2015 ITA Men’s All-American Championship at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
In singles, Tech’s 70th-ranked and 12th-seeded Joao Monteiro moved on with a 6-3, 6-3 win over UNLV’s Jakob Amilon. The Hokies also had a win from 109th-ranked Edoardo Tessaro as he downed UC Irvine’s Sebastian Heim 6-4, 6-3.
The Hokies also kicked off doubles competition with Monteiro pairing up with teammate Andreas Bjerrehus for the qualifying rounds. Monteiro and Bjerrehus opened up with a win over Texas’ John Mee and Michael Riechmann, 7-5, 7-6(4).
In the next round, Monteiro and Bjerrehus battled 30th-ranked (seeded third) Gustav Hansson and Stefan Lindmark of Ole Miss. The Tech duo claimed the first set 6-4, but the Ole Miss pair came back for a 6-3 win in the second. Tech secured the win in the tiebreak 10-5.
The Hokies will continue competition on Wednesday with the final round qualifying matches.
