ATHENS, Ga. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team had three players advance to the quarterfinals of the top singles flight on Saturday during day two of the 48th Annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships.

The Hokies’ 12th-seeded Edoardo Tessaro knocked off UGA’s second-seeded Austin Smith (finished 2015 ranked 27th) in straight sets during the Round of 16 in the Division I singles flight on Saturday. He downed the Bulldogs’ player 7-6, 7-5 to move into the quarterfinals. Tessaro will square off against Georgia’s Paul Oosterbaan in the next round.

Tech’s fifth-seeded Amerigo Contini defeated Georgia Tech’s Cole Fiegel in three-sets. After picking up the first set 6-4, Contini faltered in the second, falling 6-1, but came back to take the third 6-4. Contini moves into Sunday’s quarterfinals to take on top-seeded Wayne Montgomery of Georgia, who finished 2015 ranked 26th in the ITA.

Joao Monteiro, seeded seventh, defeated Armstrong State’s Pablo Gor to move into the quarterfinals. After giving up the first set 6-2, Monteiro rallied to take the next two in decisive fashion, claiming the win 6-1, 6-3. Monteiro will play Georgia Tech’s Christopher Eubanks who is seeded-third in the tournament.

The Hokies will be back on the court on Sunday with tournament play resuming at 8 a.m.
