Hokies have strong opening day at Southern Intercollegiates
Tech advances in singles and doubles

ATHENS, Ga. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team opened the 2015 fall season with a strong first day at the 48th Annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Center in Athens, Georgia.

Tech’s fourth-seeded Andreas Bjerrehus won both singles matches today in straight sets. In the opening round he defeated Andreia Morin-Kougoucheff of Florida Atlantic, 6-2, 6-4. Bjerrehus followed that up with a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Stetson’s Loic Blanco in the round of 32 to advance to Saturday’s round of 16.

Fifth-seeded Amerigo Contini claimed a pair of wins, starting with a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Georgia College’s Yannick Hass. In the next round, Contini dropped the first set 7-6(5). He came back strong against ETSU’s Diego Nunez, allowing just one point in the next two sets to win 6-1, 6-0.

Joao Monteiro, seeded-seventh in the field, claimed a 6-2, 6-3 win over ETSU’s Robert Herrera to kick off the day. In the round of 32, Monteiro faltered in the opening set against UGA’s Walker Duncan, giving up the set 6-4. Monteiro rallied to win the second and third with scores of 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the next round.

The Hokies’ 12th-seeded Edoardo Tessaro took the opening round against Kentucky’s Trey Yates. After dropping the first set 6-1, Tessaro responded in a big way to win the next two 6-2, 6-1. In the next round, Tessaro again gave up the early set, this time 6-4 to Tremayne Mitchell of Winthrop. The next two went Tessaro’s way as he used a 6-3, 6-3 decision to advance to the round of 16

In the Division II flight, newcomer Jason Kros got his college career off to a good start, defeating Winthrop’s Diego Quiroz 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the first round. He followed that up with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Liberty’s Max Borcuti to move on to the Round of 16 on Saturday.

Freddy Mesmer also claimed a first round win, defeating Georgia State’s Joseph Bishop 7-6, 6-2 before falling to Shameal Chaudhry of Davidson in the next round after a three-set battle. Mesmer took the opening set 6-2, but Chaudhry bounced back talking the next two sets 6-4, 6-2.

Tech’s George Cartledge had an opening round bye that sent him straight into the round of 32 where he defeated Lipscomb’s Kauai Linardi 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles, just one Tech duo was on the court. Monteiro paired up with Tessaro to defeat Eastern Kentucky’s Ales Alvaro and Sebastian Mueller, 8-4 in the Division I Doubles flight.

Contini and Bjerrehus earned a bye in the first round while the Division II Doubles flight will get underway tomorrow.
