BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team will open the 2015-16 season on Friday, Sept. 11 at the 48th Annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships hosted by the University of Georgia at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The four-day event features 170 players from 28 schools.
Competing for the Hokies this weekend are Andreas Bjerrehus, George Cartledge, Amerigo Contini, Aaron Gomez, Freddy Mesmer, Joao Monteiro, Edoardo Tessaro and newcomer Jason Kros.
The Hokies are coming off of one of the strongest seasons in program history, finishing the 2015 campaign ranked 18th in the ITA after finishing with a 20-5 overall record, including 10-2 in an always tough ACC. Bjerrehus, Contini and Monteiro also earned individual rankings, finishing the season at 52nd, 77th and 115th, respectively.
Bjerrehus, Contini, Monteiro and Tessaro have been seeded in the top-16 in the singles draw.
The field will be divided into three singles divisions and two doubles divisions. No-ad scoring will be in place for both singles and doubles. The tournament includes players from the following schools: Arkansas, Armstrong State, Barry, Clemson, College of Charleston, Columbus State, Davidson, East Tennessee State, Eastern Kentucky, Florida Atlantic, Georgia, Georgia College, Georgia Gwinnett, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State, Kentucky, Lander, Liberty, Lipscomb, Memphis, Mercer, Mississippi State, Saint Leo, Stetson, Tennessee Tech, Virginia Tech and Winthrop.
Play is scheduled to begin Friday at 8 a.m. with Division I singles matches at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex followed by Division II singles. All Division III matches on Friday will be played at the UGA intramural courts. Day one action will conclude with Divisions I and II doubles.
