Hokies earn ITA Atlantic Regional honors
Bjerrehus, Koontz and Huss recognized

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Junior Andreas Bjerrehus, senior Hunter Koontz and assistant coach Stephen Huss have earned ITA Division I Atlantic Region Men’s Tennis honors as announced Tuesday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national office.

Bjerrehus was named the Atlantic Region Player to watch while Koontz claimed the Most Improved Player (Senior) of the Year. Huss was tabbed Assistant Coach of the Year.

Bjerrehus put together one of his best seasons in 2014-15, compiling a 25-11 overall record, including 17-7 in dual competition. The Aarhus, Denmark native has been ranked as high as 32nd in this season and has earned a bid to the 2015 Men’s Tennis Singles Championship. Bjerrehus tallied wins over the No. 8 and No. 24 players during the spring.

Koontz posted his strongest season during his farewell campaign, posting a team-best 19-2 record in duals, including a 10-1 mark in the No. 4. The Deep Run, Virginia native earned his first career ranking this season in singles and had a high of No. 103 after having wins against No. 72 and No. 112. Koontz scored team-points for the Hokies in their wins over then-ranked No. 2 Duke, No. 23 Notre Dame, No. 14 North Carolina, No. 23 Louisville and No. 32 Florida State.

In addition to the players’ singles matches, Bjerrehus and Koontz paired up in doubles during the spring for a 7-3 mark in the No. 1. The pair has been tabbed as high as 35th with wins over duos ranked 17th and 13th.

Huss helped the Hokies to their best season since joining the ACC 10 years ago. Tech finished with a 20-5 overall record, including a 10-2 tally in the league. The Hokies finished the regular-season as the No. 2 seed, marking their highest finish ever in conference play. The team also reached a program-best national ranking of 12th this season and earned the honor of hosting a regional round site for the NCAA Championships for the first time in 15 years.

The Hokies will have Bjerrehus back on the court next week at the NCAA Singles Championship in Waco, Texas.
