BLACKSBURG – The 15th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team fell to No. 18 USF, 4-0 on Saturday afternoon in the second round of the 2015 NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Tech (20-5) fell behind after USF (21-6) picked up the doubles point. The Bulls’ Roberto Cid and Ignacio Gonzales-Muniz claimed an 8-3 win against the Hokies’ duo of Amerigo Contini and Jai Corbett in the No. 3.

The other two matches were back-and-forth the entire time. USF picked up the point in the No. 2 where Tech’s Joao Monteiro and Edoardo Tessaro squared off against Sasha Gozun and Vadym Kalyuzhnyy. The teams traded points throughout and were tied at 7-7, forcing the tiebreak. The pairs continued to be evenly matched with the Hokies holding a 7-6 advantage late in the tiebreak, but the Bulls scored three straight to secure the win.

Tech led in the No. 1 doubles where 39th-ranked Andreas Bjerrehus and Hunter Koontz were up 7-6 on 28th-ranked Oliver Pramming and Justin Roberts, but went unfinished once the point was decided.

The Bulls took a 2-0 lead in the match with Roberts winning 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 5 against Tech’s Tessaro.

In the No. 6, Corbett fell to USF’s Vadym Kalyuzhnny 6-4 in the opening set. The second set was a battle between the two as it went into a tiebreaker, but the USF player held on to win it 7-6(3) and give the Bulls a 3-0 lead.

The match clinching point was scored in the No. 2 where Tech’s 43rd-ranked Bjerrehus faced 124th-ranked Gozun. Bjerrehus trailed at 5-2 in the first set, but looked to make a run with back-to-back points. Gozun held on to take it 6-4. In the second set, Bjerrehus won it 6-4 after breaking Gozun. In the final set, the USF player came back strong for the 6-3 decision, helping the Bulls to advance to the Round of 16.

Three matches went unfinished. The Hokies held the advantage in the No. 3 and 4 matches. Monteiro, ranked 109, was up on Pramming 7-6(4), 6-5 on court three. Tech’s 105th-ranked Koontz was battling Gonzales-Muniz in the four and was in the third set (7-6(4), 4-6, 1-2) when the match was called.

Virginia Tech wraps up the season with a 20-5 record, marking one of the best years in program history. Bjerrehus will be back on the court next week at the NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles Championship.
