No. 55 Georgia Tech upsets No. 14 Hokies, 4-3
Yellow Jackets hold off Hokies for win in ACC quarterfinals

CARY, N.C. – The 14th-ranked and second-seeded Virginia Tech men’s tennis team was up ended by 10th-seeded (No. 55) Georgia Tech, 4-3 on Friday in the quarterfinals of the 2015 ACC Men’s Tennis Championship at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, North Carolina.

Virginia Tech (19-4) fell behind early after the Yellow Jackets (14-11) picked up the doubles point with wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 matches.

Georgia Tech won the first singles match to go on top 2-0, but the Hokies got on the board with a win on court three where No. 121 Joao Monteiro defeated Nathan Rakitt in straight-sets, 6-1, 6-3.

The next finished singles match gave the Yellow Jackets a 3-1 lead, but Virginia Tech tied it up at 3-3 with back-to-back wins. No. 105 Hunter Koontz scored in the No. 4 after dropping the first set 6-1, Koontz came back to take the next two 6-2, 6-4 over Michael Kay.

Edoardo Tessaro tied it up for the Hokies with his win on court five. Tessaro took the first set 6-3 over Cole Fiegel, but the Georgia Tech player came back for a 6-3 decision in the second. Tessaro secured the point in the third set, 6-4.

The deciding match came down to court two where the Hokies’ 64th-ranked Amerigo Contini battled with the Yellow Jackets’ Carlos Benito. After giving up the opening set, 6-4 to Benito, Contini came back in the second to win it 7-6 (7-4). In the final set the two traded points before Contini went on top 4-2, but Benito responded to tie it up at 5-5. Benito picked up the next two games to secure the win 7-5.

Virginia Tech awaits the NCAA Selection Show announcement scheduled for Tuesday, April 28 at 5:30 p.m.
