BLACKSBURG – The 14th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team is set to open the 2015 ACC Men’s Tennis Championship as the No. 2 seed on Friday, April 24, taking on 10th-seeded Georgia Tech at 9 a.m. at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, North Carolina.

Virginia Tech enters the tournament with its highest seed in program history after playing to a 10-2 mark in the league (19-3 overall). The Yellow Jackets (13-11, 9-5 ACC) has moved into the rankings, coming in at No. 55 after defeating Duke last weekend.

The Hokies are being led by No. 37 Andreas Bjerrehus and No. 64 Amerigo Contini. Bjerrehus has posted a 16-5 mark this spring, including a 12-2 record in the No. 2. Contini is 13-5 with a 10-4 mark in the No. 1. Also ranked for the Hokies is Hunter Koontz at No. 105 with a 17-2 record, seeing time primarily in the No. 3 and No. 4. Joao Monteiro is 121st with a 13-4 record, including 8-2 in the No. 3.

Virginia Tech has also had strong play from Edoardo Tessaro with a 17-3 mark, Jai Corbett at 11-3, Florian Nicoud (8-3) and Aaron Gomez (6-0) this spring season.

In doubles, Bjerrehus and Koontz are ranked 35th in the ITA with a 6-2 record, including 2-1 against nationally ranked opponents in the No. 1 spot.

Georgia Tech knocked off seventh-seeded Notre Dame, 4-0 in the first round of the tournament on Thursday. The Yellow Jackets won the doubles point to get off to a strong start and followed up with wins from Michael Kay, Cole Fiegel and Eduardo Segura in the No. 4, 5, and 6 matches, respectively.

The Yellow Jackets are led by 61st-ranked Christopher Eubanks with a 13-10 record in dual play. Fiegel is 16-7 and Segura is 12-9. Carlos Benito has tallied a 14-7 record. Benito and Segura are ranked in doubles at 87th and have a 10-5 mark in the No. 1 spot.

Virginia Tech defeated the Yellow Jackets 6-1 just two weeks ago in Blacksburg. The Hokies took the doubles point, taking the early lead. Virginia Tech claimed wins from Bjerrehus, Koontz, Monteiro, Tessaro and Corbett to secure the win on senior day.

The winner of the match will advance to Saturday’s semifinals to play the winner of third-seeded Wake Forest versus 11th-seeded Clemson.
