No. 14 Hokies shutout Miami, 7-0
Virginia Tech improves to 18-3, 9-2 ACC

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 14th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team swept ACC foe Miami, 7-0 on Friday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables, Florida.

With the win, Tech improves to 18-3 overall and 9-2 in the ACC. Miami falls to 7-15 and 1-10 in the league.

The Hokies got out to a 1-0 lead after taking the doubles point to get the day started. Tech’s 63rd-ranked duo of Andreas Bjerrehus and Hunter Koontz finished first, winning the No. 1 doubles 8-5 over Piotr Lomacki and Henrique Tsukamoto.

Amerigo Contini and Jai Corbett won in the No. 3, 8-4 over Alexander Fahnehjelm and Kevin Bondar to seal the point. The Hokies’ Joao Monteiro and Edoardo Tessaro were up 7-5 in the No. 2, but the match went unfinished once the point was decided.

Bjerrehus, ranked 38th, gave Tech a 2-0 lead as he dispatched of Miami’s 73rd-ranked Lomacki with straight-set scores of 6-2, 6-4. Aaron Gomez rolled on court six, taking down Niclas Genovese 6-4, 6-2 to put Tech on top 3-0.

The Hokies secured the team win with Tessaro’s victory in the No. 4. Tessaro fell behind 3-0 in the first set against Tsukamoto, but came back to tie it up at 4-4. The Tech player won three of the next four games to win it 7-5. In the second set, the two traded points and were tied at 6-6, but Tessaro took the tiebreaker 7-4.

Tech’s 68th-ranked Contini fell behind on court two, dropping the first set 6-4 to Christian Langmo. Contini trailed at 3-0 in the second set before answering with six straight points to win it 6-3. The Tech player controlled much of the final set as he secured the win 6-4.

On court three, No. 110 Joao Monteiro also trailed early in the opening set, going down 1-4 to Gonzalez before rallying back to win five games and tie it up at 6-6. Monteiro took the tiebreaker 7-4 before following up with a 6-3 win in the second set, giving Tech a 6-0 advantage.

Corbett completed the Hokies’ sweep of the Hurricanes. After taking the opening set 6-4, Corbett dropped the second 6-3 to the Canes’ Tefel. The two battled it out in the final set and were knotted at 6-6, but Corbett rolled to a 7-1 decision in the tiebreaker.

The Hokies will wrap up the regular season at No. 32 Florida State on Sunday, April 19. Match time is set for noon at Scott Speicher Tennis Center in Tallahassee, Fla.
