BLACKSBURG – The 12th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team took down ACC foe Georgia Tech 6-1 on Sunday afternoon on senior day at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

Tech improves to 17-3 overall and 8-2 in the ACC. The Hokies recognized seniors Hunter Koontz and Florian Nicoud prior to the start of the match.

The Hokies took the early lead after winning the doubles point. Andreas Bjerrehus and Koontz, ranked 69th, secured the match on court one, 8-3 over Christopher Eubanks and Michael Kay.

Virginia Tech clinched the point as Joao Monteiro and Edoardo Tessaro downed the Yellow’ Jackets’ 67th-ranked Carlos Benito and Eduardo Segura, 8-5.

The Yellow Jackets tied it up at 1-1 with a win in the No. 1 where 54th-ranked Christopher Eubanks notched the 6-2, 6-2 win against 69th-ranked Amerigo Contini.

Virginia Tech reclaimed the lead with Jai Corbett in the No. 6 defeating Cole Fiegel, 6-2, 6-3. The Hokies extended to a 3-1 advantage on court five as Tessaro claimed a 6-2, 6-4 win over Segura.

The Hokies’ 32nd-ranked Bjerrehus clinched the match for the team, winning in the No. 2. Bjerrehus took down Benito in straight set scores of 7-5, 6-4.

The final two matches on-court were battles. Monteiro, ranked 113th, and the Yellow Jackets’ Nathan Rakitt played a close match as the first set saw the two tied at 6-6, forcing the tiebreaker. It went back-and-forth in the tiebreaker before Monteiro was able to hold on to win it 12-10. In the second set, the two continued to keep it close early, but Monteiro was able to break the serve and win it 6-4 to give the Hokies a 5-1 lead.

In the No. 3, 119th-ranked Koontz fell in the first set to Kay 6-3, but came back to take the second 6-4. Since the team win had already been decided a super tiebreaker was played in the third. Koontz took an 8-6 lead, but Kay came back to tie it up. The two continued to trade points and were knotted at 18-18. Koontz took the next two points to secure it 20-18.

Virginia Tech will wrap up the regular season next weekend, traveling to the Sunshine State to face Miami and Florida State.
