BLACKSBURG – The 12th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team will open the weekend with a road match at VCU on Friday, April 10. Match time has been moved from its original start time of 2 p.m. to 11 a.m. due to predicted weather in the Richmond area. The Hokies will return home to host Georgia Tech on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the final home date of the 2015 regular season.
Virginia Tech (15-3, 7-2 ACC) will recognize seniors Hunter Koontz and Florian Nicoud prior to Sunday’s match.
The Hokies enter the weekend tied for second in the ACC with Duke, but own the tiebreaker with the win over the Blue Devils earlier this season. In 12th nationally, the Hokies have earned one of their highest rankings in program history.
Virginia Tech is coming off a 6-1 loss to fourth-ranked Virginia. Koontz picked up the point in the match for the Hokies with a win in the No. 4.
The Hokies are being led by 32nd-ranked Andreas Bjerrehus who has posted a 13-4 mark this season. Amerigo Contini, ranked 69th, is 10-4 while Joao Monteiro is 9-4 and has earned a 113th ranking. Koontz rounds out the ranked players for the Hokies in 115th with a 14-2 tally on the season. Edoardo Tessaro has also been strong for the Hokies this season with a 13-3 record. Jai Corbett is 8-2 and Nicoud is 8-3.
VCU (14-10) fell to Memphis 5-2 the last time out. The Rams won the doubles point and Toni Battle picked up a point in the No. 6. VCU’s last win came with a 4-0 decision over Fordham last week. The Rams took the doubles point and had wins from Catalin Fifea (Ct. 2), Louis Ishizaka (Ct. 5) and Marcos Rocca (Ct. 6). VCU gave up just three games in the finished singles matches.
Virginia Tech defeated VCU 5-2 last season. After giving up the doubles point, the Hokies came back to win five of the singles matches as Contini, Bjerrehus, Monteiro, Koontz and Corbett all recorded victories.
Georgia Tech (11-8, 3-5 ACC) will face Virginia on Friday before making the trip to Blacksburg for Sunday’s match. Last weekend the Yellow Jackets gave up a 6-1 decision to NC State. Carolos Benito scored the lone point for Georgia Tech with a 3-set win in the No. 2.
Christopher Eubanks leads Georgia Tech on the season, ranked 54th with a 12-7 record playing primarily in the No. 1 and 2 singles. Benito is 13-4 while Cole Fiegel has tallied a 14-5 mark. Eduardo Segura is 11-6.
The Hokies won last season 5-2 in Atlanta. Virginia Tech swept the doubles matches and secured points from Bjerrehus, Nicoud, Koontz and Corbett in singles.
Virginia Tech will wrap up the regular season next weekend with a swing through the Sunshine State, traveling to Miami and Florida State.
