LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The 13th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team defeated ACC foe 23rd-ranked Louisville on Friday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center in Louisville, Ky. Tech improves to 15-2 overall and 7-1 in the conference.
Tech got off to a strong start as the Hokies took the doubles point, winning on courts two and three. Joao Monteiro and Edoardo Tessaro paired up in the No. 3 for the 8-2 decision over Luis Elizondo and Van Damrongsri.
In the No. 2 Amerigo Contini and Jai Corbett secured the doubles point as they downed Sebastian Stiefelmeyer and Albert Wagner in a tiebreaker, going 8-7(4).
The Hokies took a 2-0 lead with Hunter Koontz rolling past Chris Simich with straight-set scores of 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 4.
Louisville (19-5, 5-3 ACC) got on the board with a win in the No. 5 where Van Damrongsri picked up the point over Tech’s Tessaro 6-4, 6-3. The Cardinals tied it up in the next finished match. Fifth-ranked Sebastian Stiefelmeyer had a 6-2, 6-2 win in the No. 1 against 63rd-ranked Contini.
Tech’s 45th-ranked Andreas Bjerrehus gave the Hokies a 3-2 lead as he downed 123rd-ranked Alex Gornet in straight sets. In the first set, Bjerrehus trailed at 5-3 before rallying to win four consecutive games for the 7-5 win. The two were tied at 3-3 in the second set, but Bjerrehus took it 6-4.
Corbett’s win at No. 6 over Elizondo secured the match for the Hokies. The Tech player notched a 6-4 win in the first set, but had to battle it out in the second as it went into a tiebreaker. Corbett trailed at 4-1 before winning five of the next six games to tie it up at 5-5. The two were tied again at 6-6, but Corbett held on for an 11-9 decision in the tiebreaker.
The Hokies’ final point came in the No. 3 where 109th-ranked Monteiro defeated 94th-ranked Wagner. After dropping the first set 7-5, Monteiro came back strong to take the next two with scores of 6-4.
Virginia Tech snapped a three-match skid to the Cardinals, having lost the last three with scores of 4-3.
Tech will return to the court on Sunday, April 5 when the Hokies travel to rival and fourth-ranked Virginia for a 1 p.m. match at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville, Va.
