BLACKSBURG – The 13th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team is set for a pair of road matches beginning with No. 23 Louisville on Friday, April 3, 2:30 p.m. at Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. Tech will follow with a trip to rival and 4th-ranked Virginia on Sunday, April 5 for a 1 p.m. match at Snyder Tennis Center.
The Hokies (14-2, 6-1 ACC) enter the weekend ranked second in the league and are coming off a 4-3 win over then-ranked No. 12 North Carolina. Tech dropped the doubles point, but came back strong in singles, taking a 3-2 lead after wins from Edoardo Tessaro, Aaron Gomez and Jai Corbett. The Heels tied it up at 3-3, but the Hokies’ Andreas Bjerrehus took the match on court one to help secure the win.
Bjerreus, ranked 45th, has tallied a 12-3 record this spring, including 5-2 mark in the ACC with wins over No. 8 and No. 24. Tech’s 63rd-ranked Amerigo Contini has a 9-5 record, but was sidelined last weekend. The Hokies’ Joao Monteiro is 109th and has posted an 8-3 record. Hunter Koontz is 12-2 while Tessaro is 13-1.
Louisville (19-4, 5-2 ACC) picked up a 5-2 win over Clemson the last time out. The Cardinals won the doubles point with wins in the No. 2 and 3 before Sebastian Stiefelmeyer (No. 1), Albert Wagner (No. 3), Chris Simich (No. 5) and Van Darongsri (No. 6) secured their respective singles matches en route to the team win.
Stiefelmeyer leads the Cardinals, ranked fifth in the ITA standings with a 14-2 mark in dual play. Wagner is 94th and has tallied a 13-5 record. Alexo Gornet rounds out Louisville’s ranked players at 123rd and sits at 11-4 on the season. Simich has also had a strong spring with a 14-3 tally.
Virginia (14-3, 7-0 ACC) leads the conference and is coming off a 6-1 win over Duke. The lone point scored by the Blue Devils came in the No. 3 where UVA’s Thai-Son Kwiatkowski fell to Raphael Hemmeler.
Ryan Shane enters the match ranked sixth in the ITA, going 11-4 this spring. Kwiatkowski is 10th and holds an 11-3 record. Mitchell Frank, ranked 29th, has tallied an 11-2 mark while Collin Altamirano (ranked 55th) is 13-0. J.C. Aragone is 10-3 in duals.
Sunday’s match is presented by Virginia529, the official college savings plan of Virginia Tech Athletics.
