No. 16 Hokies hold off No. 37 NC State, 4-3
Tech rallies back on courts two and five to secure win

RALEIGH, N.C. – The 16th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team trailed late in the match, but battled back, holding off 37th-ranked NC State for a 4-3 win on Sunday afternoon in ACC action in Raleigh, N.C.

The Hokies (13-2, 5-1 ACC) got off to a strong start, winning the doubles point with victories on courts two and one against the Wolfpack (10-8, 0-5 ACC). Tech took the match on two as Joao Monteiro and Edoardo Tessaro teamed up to down Beck Bond and Austin Powell, 8-4.

On court one, Andreas Bjerrehus and Hunter Koontz paired up to knock off 17th-ranked Robbie Mudge and Ian Dempster, 8-7(5).

Tech went up 2-0 as Koontz claimed a 6-3, 6-2 win over 72nd-ranked Austin Powell in the No. 3.

NC State rallied back, winning the next three singles matches to take a 3-2 advantage over the visiting Hokies. The Wolfpack scored its first point with Bond’s win over Tech’s 98th-ranked Monteiro, 6-4, 6-2 on court four.

Thomas Weigel’s 6-3, 6-2 decision against Florian Nicoud tied it up at 2-2. The Hokies’ 40th-ranked Bjerrehus fell to Mudge 6-3, 6-4 on court one to give the Wolfpack the lead.

Tessaro battled with Nick Horton in the No. 5. Tessaro gave up the opening set 6-3, but came back to take the second by the same margin. In the deciding set, Tessaro fell behind 5-2, but fought his way back into it, winning five straight games to take it 7-5 and tie the match up 3-3 between the Hokies and Wolfpack.

The deciding match came down to the Hokies’ 55th-ranked Amerigo Contini who was facing Simon Norenius in the No. 2. Contini fell in the first set 6-2 before coming back to take the second 6-4. In the final set, Contini claimed the 6-4 decision to clinch the match for Tech.

Virginia Tech will return to the court on Sunday, March 29 when the Hokies host North Carolina at 2 p.m. at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
