No. 16 Hokies falter at No. 12 Wake Forest, 5-2
Monteiro, Tessaro pick up wins in singles for Tech

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The 16th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team battled 12th-ranked Wake Forest on the road on Friday afternoon with three singles matches going to third sets, but the Deacons held on for a 5-2 win. It is the first loss in ACC play for Tech this season.

Virginia Tech (12-2, 4-1 ACC) fell behind after giving up the doubles’ point to the Deacons (13-4, 3-1 ACC) with losses on courts one and two. The match on court three went unfinished, but the Hokies’ Amerigo Contini and Jai Corbett led 4-3 over Keivon Tabrizi and Romain Bogaerts when it was called.

The Hokies fell behind 2-0 in singles as Wake’s 63rd-ranked Noah Rubin claimed a 6-1, 6-1 decision over 55th-ranked Contini in the No. 1. Wake’s 69th-ranked Jon Ho put the Deacons on top 3-0 with a 6-4, 6-3 win against Hunter Koontz in the No. 4.

Tech got on the board with the next finished match as Edoardo Tessaro rallied to take the match on court five. After dropping the first set 6-4 to Christian Seraphim, Tessaro came back strong, taking the next two with decisive margins of 6-2, 6-2.

Tech’s 40th-ranked Andreas Bjerrehus also battled to three sets against Wake’s 12th-ranked Bogaerts. The Deacons’ player took the first set 6-4, but Bjerrehus answered with a 6-3 win in the second. In the final set the two kept it close in the early points with Bjerrehus trailing at 2-3. Bogaerts won three of the next four games to secure the deciding set and the team win for the Deacons.

The Hokies also scored with a win in the No. 3 where 98th-ranked Joao Monteiro overcame Skander Mansouri after dropping the first set 6-4 to the Wake player. Monteiro rallied for a 6-4 win in the second set and followed it up with 6-4 mark in the third to claim the point.

Tech’s Corbett was the final match finished despite only going to two sets. He and Maksim Kan traded points throughout as neither player wanted to give up a game. Kan was able to hold off Corbett, 7-6(3), 7-5.

The Hokies will remain on the road to face No. 37 NC State on Sunday, March 22 at 1 p.m. in Raleigh,N.C.
