No. 15 Hokies down No. 62 Clemson 6-1
Tech off to its best ACC start since joining league

BLACKSBURG – The 15th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team downed No. 62 Clemson 6-1 on Sunday afternoon to improve to 12-1 overall and 4-0 in the ACC, marking the team’s best league start since joining the conference in 2004.

Tech took the doubles point with wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 matches. Hunter Koontz and Florian Nicoud paired up on court three to defeat Alejandro Augusto and Daffra Sanon, 8-5.

In the No. 2, Joao Monteiro and Edoardo Tessaro clinched the point for Tech with an 8-4 decision over Clemson’s (9-8, 0-3 ACC) Hampton Drake and Christian Harris.

The Hokies took a 2-0 lead after Koontz rolled past the Tigers’ Austin Ansari 6-0, 6-2 on court four. Tech’s 98th-ranked Monteiro defeated Sanon 6-3, 6-2 on court three to put the Hokies on top 3-0.

Amerigo Contini, ranked 55th, clinched the match for the Hokies as he defeated Clemson’s 91st-ranked Hunter Harrington in straight sets on court one, 6-3, 6-3.

Clemson got on the board with a win in the No. 6, but the Hokies claimed the final two singles matches beginning with 40th-ranked Andreas Bjerrehus taking down Augusto, 7-5, 7-5.

The Hokies wrapped up the match with Tessaro battling Drake on court five. Tessaro took the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6(4) but Dreake came back for a 6-4 win in the second set. The final set was decided in a super tiebreaker where Tessaro held on for the 10-8 win.

Virginia Tech will return to action on Friday, March 20 at Wake Forest in a 4 p.m. match.
