No. 44 Hokies upset No. 23 Notre Dame, 4-3
Tech wins four straight singles matches to earn victory

BLACKSBURG – The 44th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team dropped the doubles point but won four straight singles matches to clinch the victory over Notre Dame, 4-3, on Friday afternoon at Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus. Tech begins its conference play with a strong home victory.

The Hokies put up a tough fight for the doubles point, with courts two and three going into tiebreaks. Amerigo Contini and Andreas Bjerrehus started strong as they defeated 19th-ranked Eddy Covalschi and Josh Hagar, 8-4.

On court two, Joao Monteiro and Jai Corbett took the match to a tiebreak against Alex Lawson and Quentin Monaghan, but came up short losing 8-7 (7-1). Hunter Koontz and Florian Nicoud also battled to a tiebreak on court three, eventually losing to Dougie Barnard and Billy Pecor 8-7 (7-3).

Tech overcame the doubles loss and won four of six singles matches. Edoardo Tessaro evened the score 1-1 with his win over Lawson 7-6 (6-2), 6-2 on court five. Koontz defeated Pecor 6-2, 7-6 (6-4) in the No. 4 to give the Hokies a 2-1 advantage.

Seventy-fourth ranked Bjerrehus defeated No. 102 ranked Hagar on court two, 6-2, 6-3, to build Tech’s lead to 3-1. Corbett clinched the team win for the Hokies as he defeated Nicolas Montoya 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 at No. 6.

On court one, No. 24 ranked Monaghan defeated No. 49 ranked Contini 7-6 (6-3), 6-4 giving Notre Dame their second point of the day. At No. 3, Covalschi defeated Monteiro 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 to bring the overall score to 4-3 in favor of the Hokies.

Virginia Tech returns to action on Sunday, March 8 at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. The Hokies continue ACC play, taking on No. 2 Duke at 11:00 a.m.
