No. 35 Hokies shut out Bonnies 7-0

BLACKSBURG - The 35th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team won all six singles and the three doubles matches to sweep past St. Bonaventure 7-0 on Saturday afternoon at Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Virginia. With the win, Tech completed the sweep of Saturday’s doubleheader.

The Hokies (8-1) got off to another strong start, winning all three doubles matches to claim the point. Edoardo Tessaro and Joao Monteiro defeated Trevor Haskell and TJ DeSanto, 8-0 in the No. 3.

In the No. 2 Hunter Koontz and Florian Nicoud teamed up for the 8-0 win over Carlos de La Cruz and Andrew Blair. Andreas Bjerrehus and Jai Corbett took the 8-4 decision over Victor Blanco and Hector Martinez in the No. 1.

In singles, Tech dominated, winning all six matches in straight sets. Nicoud put the Hokies up 2-0 with a win over Haskell 6-0, 6-1 on court five. Aaron Gomez’s 6-0, 6-0 win against DeSanto in the No. 6 gave the Hokies a 3-0 advantage.

Bjerrehus, ranked 74th, clinched the team win for the Hokies as he defeated Victor Blanco 6-0, 6-1 on court two.

In the No. 1, Tech’s 49th-ranked Amerigo Contini picked up the fifth point for Tech with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Blair. Corbett defeated de La Cruz on court four with a 6-1, 6-0 victory.

Tessaro completed the sweep for Tech on court three winning 6-0, 6-4 over Martinez.

Virginia Tech returns to action on Friday, March 6 in the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. The Hokies open the ACC slate, taking on Notre Dame at 2 p.m.
