No. 35 Hokies down UMBC, 7-0
Tech takes doubles point and wins all six singles

BLACKSBURG - The 35th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team won all six singles and two doubles matches to sweep UMBC, 7-0 on Saturday morning at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va.

Tech improves to 7-1 on the season while the Retrievers fall to 4-3.

The excitement started early as the doubles point came down to a tiebreak in the No. 2. On court three, Tech’s Jai Corbett and Joao Monteiro defeated Justin Carter and Eliott Loubatie 8-3. UMBC’s Daniel Gray and Alex Drean then defeated Andreas Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini 8-4 on court one, leaving the deciding match on the No. 2.

In the No. 2 Hunter Koontz and Florian Nicoud battled to a tiebreak against Jaan Kononov and Melker Svard, eventually winning 8-7 after an exciting 8-6 decision in the tiebreak. The victory clinched the doubles point for the Hokies.

In singles, Koontz put the Hokies up 2-0 with a win over Svard 6-3, 6-0 on court three. The Hokies’ 49th-ranked Contini claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win against Kononov in the No. 1 to give the Hokies a 3-0 advantage.

Monteiro clinched the team win for the Hokies as he defeated Drean 6-3, 6-2 on court four.

Edoardo Tessaro picked up the fifth point for Tech with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Gray in the No. 6. Bjerrehus, ranked 74th, took the match on court two 6-3, 6-1 over Carter.

The Hokie’s Corbett completed the sweep for Tech on court five, but UMBC’s Loubatie took the match to three sets. Loubatie took the first one 6-4, but Corbett came back to claim the next two with scores of 6-3, 6-3.

Virginia Tech plays the second match of its doubleheader in the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center today Saturday, Feb. 28. The Hokies will take on St Bonaventure at 3:30 p.m.
