No. 35 Hokies host UMBC and St. Bonaventure in doubleheader

BLACKSBURG – The 35th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team will host a pair of non-conference foes on Saturday, Feb. 28 at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. Tech will face UMBC at 10 a.m. before taking on St. Bonaventure at 3:30 p.m.

Virginia Tech (6-1) is coming of a 7-0 sweep of College of Charleston last weekend. The Hokies claimed all three doubles matches along with the six singles matches to secure the win.

Tech has two players ranked by the ITA in the latest singles standings with Amerigo Contini at 49th and Andreas Bjerrehus at 74th. Contini has tallied a 5-0 record in dual play while Bjerrehus sits at a 5-1 mark. Hunter Koontz is undefeated at 6-0.

Joao Monteiro and Jai Corbett join Koontz in the unbeaten ranks with records of 4-0 and 3-0, respectively. Florian Nicoud has posted a 5-1 record for the Hokies and Edoardo Tessaro is 4-1.

UMBC (4-2) picked up a 4-3 win over William & Mary the last time out. After losing the doubles point, the Retrievers came back to take the No. 1, 2, 3 and 5 singles matches as Jaan Kononov, Justin Carter, Melker Svard and Eliott Loubatie helped secure the match.

Svard is 4-1 in duals this season while Alex Drean has a 4-2 mark. Carter has posted a 3-1 record and Daniel Gray is 3-2 for the Retrievers.

St. Bonaventure (2-7) dropped a pair of matches falling to Army and Marist at the Army Invitational. The Bonnies lone win on the weekend was in the No. 2 where Andrew Blair defeated the player from Marist.

Hector Martinez has compiled a 5-4 record this season for the Bonnies with Blair right behind at 4-5. Victor Blanco is 3-6.

Following Saturday’s matches, the Hokies will open the ACC slate, hosting Notre Dame and Duke next weekend.
