No. 33 Hokies sweep past Cougars, 7-0

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The 33rd-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team won all six singles and the three doubles matches to sweep past College of Charleston 7-0 on Saturday afternoon at Patriots Point Tennis Center in Charleston, South Carolina.

The Hokies (6-1) got off to a strong start, winning all three doubles matches to claim the point. Andreas Bjerrehus and Hunter Koontz paired up in the No. 1 to defeat Franz Sydow and Brice Allanic, 8-3.

In the No. 2 Amerigo Contini teamed up with Jai Corbett for the 8-4 win over Josh Record and Charlie Ghriskey. Joao Monteiro and Florian Nicoud took the 8-6 decision over Garrett Gordon and Vasily Kichigin in the No. 3.

In singles, Monteiro put the Hokies up 2-0 with a win over Ghriskey 6-1, 6-1 on court three. Corbett’s 6-0,6-2 win against Gordon in the No. 6 gave the Hokies a 3-0 advantage.

Koontz clinched the team win for the Hokies as he defeated Allanic 6-1, 6-4 on court two.

Picking up the fifth point for Tech was Edoardo Tessaro as he downed Kichigin with straight set scores of 6-4, 7-6(1) in the No. 4. Nicoud, ranked 123rd in the ITA, took the match on court five, 7-5, 7-5 over Zack Lewis.

The Hokies’ 73rd-ranked Bjerrehus completed the sweep for Tech on court one, but CofC’s Rodrigo Encinas took the Tech player to three sets. Encinas took the first one 6-1, but Bjerrehus came back to claim the next two with scores of 6-3, 6-4.

Virginia Tech will be back in the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center next weekend, hosting a double-header on Saturday, Feb. 28. The Hokies will take on UMBC at 10 a.m. before squaring off against St. Bonaventure at 3:30 p.m.
