Hokies improve two spots, finish 10th at Grandover

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team posted a three-round total of 1-under 863 and finished in 10th place at the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate on Monday afternoon. The two-day event, hosted by UNC Greensboro was played at the par-72, 6,800-yard West Course at the Grandover Resort, outside of Greensboro, North Carolina.

Tech shot a 2-over 290 in the Sunday morning round and improved to a two-under 286 in the afternoon session. The Hokies shot a 287 on Monday to finish at 863.

Sarit Suwannarut, a freshman from Bangkok, Thailand, led the Hokies, posting a three-round total of 2-under 214, and tied for 27th overall. He finished 10 strokes behind medalist Nick Budd of Georgia State.

Mark Lawrence Jr., a sophomore from Richmond, Virginia, and Joey Lane, a senior from Great Falls, Virginia, tied for 35th, at even-par 216. Logan Yates, a sophomore from Ruckersville, Virginia, tied for 42nd at 217 and Tanner Owens, a freshman from Milton Tennessee, tied for 76th at 23-.

Two Hokies played the tournament as individuals. Drew Johnson, a senior from nearby Oak Ridge, North Carolina, is tied for 69th at 228 and Tom Crow, a freshman from Virginia Beach, Virginia, is 84that 241.

Duke won the team title, finishing with a 30-under 834, four strokes better than Iowa State and five strokes ahead of Liberty and Northwestern. NC State was fifth at 840, host UNC Greensboro was sixth at 847 and Purdue was seventh at 849. VCU was eighth at 857 and Georgia State was ninth at 859, four strokes ahead of the Hokies. Kansas State was 11th at 864, Utah was 12th at 873 and Davidson was 13th at 896.

This is the final event of the Fall 2016 season. Tech returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 19 at the Puerto Rico Classic.
