BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team will conclude the fall portion of the 2016-17 season at the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate on Sunday and Monday. The two-day event, hosted by UNC Greensboro will be played at the Par-72, 6,800 yard West Course at the Grandover Resort, outside of Greensboro, North Carolina.
This is the fifth consecutive year that the event has been played at Grandover, but the first year on the West Course. The East Course was deemed unplayable following the severe weather earlier this month in North Carolina. Tech has played the event every year since 2009 and finished second in 2014.
The 13-team tournament features teams from across the country. Tech is joined by fellow ACC members Duke and NC State this year. Nine teams in the field, including the Hokies at No. 55, are ranked in the Golfstat.com top 100 rankings. Purdue returns as the defending champion.
Sarit Suwannarut, a freshman from Bangkok, Thailand, will lead off for the Hokies. The newcomer had a pair of third place finishes in his first two collegiate events and tied for 13th at UNC and 15th two weeks ago in Tennessee. He leads the Hokies in stroke average at 69.50.
Mark Lawrence Jr., will play the second spot for the Hokies. A sophomore from Richmond, Virginia, Lawrence is second in scoring average at 71.00 and crunch time scoring, at 69.67. He finished fifth at Marshall to open the season.
Playing third for Tech is Logan Yates. A sophomore from Ruckersville, Virginia, Yates is third on the team in scoring at 71.30 and had two top-10 finishes in the first two events of the season.
Playing the four spot for Tech is Joey Lane. The senior from Great Falls, Virginia, secured his first collegiate win at VCU in September. He won the Virginia State Amateur and the prestigious Eastern Amateur over the summer. He tied for 15th at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in the last outing for the Hokies
Tanner Owens will move into the fifth position for Tech this week. The freshman from Milton, Tennessee has played in two events this fall, with two top 50 finishes.
Two Hokies will be competing as individuals this weekend. Drew Johnson, a senior from nearby Oak Ridge North Carolina, has competed in every event this season and is sixth on the team in scoring. Tom Crow, a freshman from Virginia Beach, Virginia, will be making his third appearance of the fall and second consecutive.
Practice rounds are set for Saturday and the competition begins Sunday morning, with the first of two rounds on that day. The final round will be played on Monday. Live stats will be available on Hokiesports.com, via a link from Golfstat.com.
